When it comes to working out, getting and staying motivated is half the battle.
Motivation easily comes and goes.
But getting motivated can drive us to push hard during workouts….or even be that final factor to get us off the couch!
Here are some tips by our Masters Athlete Michelle Jezycki on getting motivated and getting started!
1) Understand the need to make YOU a priority!
We are so focused on making our work/career, family and others a priority in our lives we unfortunately move ourselves further and further down that line of importance. Think about it for a moment….if all these other people or “things” are relying on you, how effective and/or helpful can you be if you hit burnout, get ill or have the proverbial wheels fall off? Making YOU a priority is key. Take the steps necessary now to commit to being the best, healthier you, you can be and watch the other areas of your life reap the benefits as you now have more energy, a more positive outlook and a greater command of the stressors in your life!
2) Start with a small goal
We don’t all need to enter a race to get started on our own road to wellness. It may be a goal to lose 5, 10, 15 pounds. It may be to simply get “moving” or walk 3-4 times a week; start running; eat healthier or incorporate juicing into your lifestyle. Whatever your goal….SET IT! Write it down and make sure it is not a hugely lofty, unattainable goal, rather a reasonable small step in the direction of a larger goal to live well, or get off of your weight related medication. Keep the goal visible where you will have to see it daily.
3) Think “Progress, not Perfection!”
If we focus on the body type in the grocery store checkout line magazine covers and expect that one day we too will look like that, we are so far off the wagon we need to reboot and start again. Forward motion in our goals is vital. Not every day will we make huge progress but we will make SOME progress, nonetheless. Shed the thoughts of perfection and focus on making progress daily. Celebrate the small milestones along the way of your wellness journey. They will keep you motivated to get to the next one.
4) Surround yourself with like minded people
Whether it is a weight loss journey, your first 5k walk/run race or even the goal of living a healthier life, having a “team” of folks around you who believe in YOU and what you are doing can be key to getting over a hump or off of a plateau. You will find others around you trying to convince you your workout can wait and happy hour is more important!! Often times it is their own guilt of not having the courage to do what you set out to do that will cause others to sometimes unknowingly sabotage your success. Instead of caving in, get your YOU time in and then meet up with the office crew for happy hour! Having others who share the same passion for being the best person they can be as well, will help keep you motivated and learning from each other as you go along. You can fit your YOU time in with as little as 30 min a day a few times a times a week.
5) Share the “high” by encouraging others to get started
Once you start to make progress on the healthier you, don’t be surprised when others come asking you questions about how good your skin looks, or “are you losing weight?” Take it as your opportunity to share what you have learned on your own journey with others who can benefit from it and perhaps even kick start their own wellness journey themselves. Wellness is contagious!! Share it
